Steps Pdx School focuses on quality of movement, developing artistry, building strength, and perfecting technique

Artistic Director, Kathryn Harden and Artistic Staff, have carefully curated the curriculum to challenge the physical and technical abilities of each individual dancer, in a safe and positive environment. Dancers are placed in levels based on ability, not age, in order to benefit the most from their training. Progression into each level is earned through hard work, determination, and discipline. Enrollment dates are September and January.

Performance experience is a fundamental part of training. Ages 7+ enter the program by placement auditions, held in September, January and August.

What else does our Program offer?

·      Mentor Program: Dancers within the School are paired with younger dancers in the School to mentor. Dancers in the highest level and pre-professional level are paired with professionals in the field of dance. Past mentors include dancers and staff from Miami City Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, Oregon Ballet Theatre and more. Mentors provide educational and developmental advice and guidance, while working together to identify the mentee’s personal and professional goals, as well as developing a plan for achieving those goals.

·      Seminars & Workshops: Experts share their experiences and expertise with our students, who specialize in topics including mental health, body-work, nutrition, injury prevention, music and dance history, as well as pointe shoe fitting/care.

·      Performance Opportunity: Students in the School have the opportunity to perform in the December Winter Performance (Nightmare Before Christmas) and June Spring Performance (Contemporary/Classical works).

·      Exposure: Dancers are exposed to various styles of dance in and out of the classroom. We bring in teachers and guest artists from around the country who train and teach in various styles for students to be proficient and knowledgeable in. Students are invited to participate in conferences such as (IABD, International Association of Blacks in Dance) to train and audition with different choreographers and master teachers. Students take seasonal field trips to see live performances of various dance companies from around the world (Pacific Northwest Ballet, Alvin Ailey, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Philadanco!, Sasha Waltz and Guests, Grupo Corpo, Urban Bush Women, Oregon Ballet Theatre and more). *Throughout Covid times, we watched more videos and live streams.

·      Pre-Professional Dance Track: Steps PDX Faculty works one-on-one with students to strategize a plan to help each student successfully achieve their dance career goals. We set students up with professional photos and facilitate resume building.

·      Quality training and a nurturing environment.

Studio safety procedures

We are excited to announce that we will be offering in-person or virtual dance classes (depending on your comfort level) this 2021/22 season, beginning Monday, September 13th.

We understand the need to take significant measures to protect the health and safety of our dancers, families, artistic staff, and community. In-Studio classes are limited in size due to state mandates and are filled on a first-come first-served basis. Once we reach a capacity of 15 dancers per class, you will be placed on our waitlist in the order we receive. We will be taking preventative measures to ensure everyone’s safety and continue to monitor information from the CDC, Oregon Health Authority, and the Multnomah County Health Department, while implementing best practices accordingly.

Steps Pdx reserves the right to cancel classes if there are changes to the pandemic or the state-mandated regulations.
